Dear CODEPINK DC Activist


There’s a lot going on in DC over the next week and we’ll hope you’ll join us for these important (and some fun!) events. Our highlighted events for this week, featured at the top, are in commemoration of Mike Brown, the young unarmed black teenager who was shot and killed by police in Ferguson, Missouri. His murder sparked an uprising against police brutality and systemic racism in Ferguson that has captured the attention of the nation. Join us for these events in DC that will be held in his memory.

Rally at the Justice Department For Mike Brown And Against Police Brutality and Militarization 


>Where: Constitution Ave between 9th and 10th in front of the Department of Justice, NW 

>When: Wednesday, Aug 27 4-5pm


Join us outside the Department of Justice to call for justice for Mike Brown and an overhaul of US law enforcement tactics to stop police brutality and the militarization of our police forces. The rally will include speakers such as legal experts, community organizers and more. From there we'll march across town to the Busboys and Poets Town Hall event (see details below). Action co-sponsors include the No FEAR Coalition, CODEPINK, WPFW Radio, Popular Resistance, Congress Against Racism and Corruption in Law Enforcement, We Act Radio, Federally Employed Women-Legal and Education Fund, and Blacks in Government - Heritage Chapter.


“Ferguson and Beyond - The Way Forward” A Town Hall Meeting on Police Killings of Black Men


>Where: Busboys and Poets (14th and V street)

>When: 6:30 pm, August 27, 2014


Join CODEPINK and other concerned citizens at a large town hall meeting sponsored by Busboys and Poets, A Continuing Talk on Race (A.C.T.O.R) and the Institute of the Black World 21st Century (IBW) this Wednesday. A panel of esteemed speakers has been organized to have an open dialogue about militarized police and the racial tensions that remain prominent in our country. Please read more here!

Hoops Not Bombs at the White House 


>Where: The White House (1600 Pennsylvania Ave NW)

>When: August, 21st Thursday at 6:00pm


Don’t miss our hula hoop jam for peace right on Pennsylvania Ave in front of the White House at 6:00 pm on August 21st. With bombs being dropped from Gaza to Iraq, we've been in the streets protesting for peace a lot lately, so let's take some time to de-stress and get in shape for the long haul!Bring hoops if you have 'em, but don't worry if you don't- we have plenty! Other toys welcome too- poi, hackysack, jumprope, etc. (but no fire spinning- we'll be in front of the White House!) Come enjoy old and new friends, music, and wiggle your hips for peace :) RSVP Now.


Get your groove on at Viva Palestina: Hip Hop Concert in Solidarity with the People of Palestine!

Jazz up your Saturday evening and support  the Palestinian people at the Viva Palestina hip hop concert featuring amazing musical artists and activists: Mazzi, Khaki Mustafa, Luci Murphy, Leftist, Enoch & DJ Earth1ne. Doors open at 7pm and the show begins at 8pm. This is a great opportunity to meet fellow activists, enjoy Palestinian hip hop and show your support for an immediate lift of the blockade and an end to Israeli oppression! On August 9, 2014, a police officer in Ferguson, Missouri profiled and fatally shot unarmed 18-year-old Michael Brown, leaving his body uncovered in the street for hours. We know this wasn’t an isolated incident.--- racial profiling and targeted state violence has a horrific history in communities of color in America. Join us to march with Answer Coalition, National Black United Front, Party for Socialism and Liberation and We Act Radio this Saturday in commemoration of Michael Brown! RSVP Here!


Global Day of Action to Free Mohamed Soltan- Action at John Kerry’s House. 


>Where: John Kerry’s House, 3320 O St., NW Washington DC

>When: August 25th, 2014, 6:00pm

Mohamed Soltan a 26-year-old US citizen languishing in an Egyptian jail cell for protesting the Egyptian military coup of June 2013. He is a graduate of Ohio State University and has been on hunger strike since January, 2014 to protest his detention. No evidence incriminating him has been found to this day. Join us for this global day of action and invite others to participate by sending in pictures and videos showing their support of Mohamed by using #FreeSoltan via Facebook and Twitter. RSVP NOW!
