Janet Weil's report back:

As part of the Progressive Democrats of America "Educate Congress" nationwide visits to congressional district offices, I met with Elise Bauer, Veterans Affairs staffer for Rep. George Miller of California's 11th district. Taking the PDA letter on legislation and a handy budget comparison chart from National Priorities Network as my "handouts", my "asks" to the congressman were:

-- vote for the Progressive Caucus budget;
-- oppose the Ryan (Republican) budget;
-- support Rep. Barbara Lee's bill to Repeal the Authorization to Use Military Force.

Elise was friendly and receptive, especially appreciating the budget comparison chart which she had not seen before. She promised to pass on my messages to her counterpart in DC.

Personal note: it was satisfying to do this in tandem with my SF CODEPINK buddy Shirley Golub, who met with Rep. Pelosi's staffers the same day.

EPILOGUE: Rep. Miller abstained from voting on the Progressive Caucus budget, but sent out an email stressing his vehement, principled opposition to the Ryan bill, which would gut social services while leaving the Pentagon budget as bloated as ever.
