SF Says No to Indefinite Detention - Unanimous Vote!

February 26, 2013
Bay Area CODEPINK
San Francisco, CA

In a multicultural coalition effort lasting several months, the SF 99% Coalition (which Bay Area CODEPINK is a founding member of), celebrated the victory of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors voting UNANIMOUSLY for a resolution opposing the indefinite detention provisions of the National Defense Authorization Acts (NDAA) of 2012 and 2013. San Francisco became the 18th, and largest, city to pass such a resolution in a national campaign organized by the Bill of Rights Defense Committee. For more on this campaign, please read attorney Nadia Kayyali's blog post, linked below.

Among the speakers at a press conference shortly before the historic vote in City Hall were these two courageous women:

"With the NDAA, our civil rights are really on the edge of being violated...by the military or the government..." - Karen Korematsu, daughter of Fred Korematsu, a Japanese-American who bravely fought indefinite detention during WWII, and for justice for detainees for decades afterward.

Samina Sundas: "As an American Muslim, I have been suffering since 9/11... If you're not outraged with what's happening in our country, you're not paying attention."
