One Billion Rising

February 14, 2013
Bay Area CODEPINK
San Francisco, CA

Hundreds of women including lots of codepinkers (and some male allies) gathered at the South Plaza of the iconic Golden Gate Bridge to "strike - dance - rise" while dressed in their pink and red finery! Bay Area CODEPINK's usual monthly walk for peace on the GG Bridge was rescheduled for Valentine's Day so that we could be part of this global movement to say NO to rape and all violence against women, and YES to joy and solidarity with our sisters everywhere.

Handmade signs, many in the shape of hearts, proclaimed:

THEY ARE ALL OUR DAUGHTERS
DON'T FORGET OUR SISTERS
SACRED POWER RISING
GUN CONTROL
and simply, poignantly:
LOVE

CODEPINK co-founder Jodie Evans "mothered" this as a CP project, inspired by One Billion Rising founder and "Vagina Monologues" playwright Eve Ensler. Nancy Mancias and Samantha Deer were awesome local organizers.

We danced the One Billion Rising dance, marched to the center of the bridge, returned to the plaza to dance some more, shared stories of activism against violence against women, and of course had our photos taken about a billion times! The celebration was a wonderful "cross-fertilization" of women active in many different causes and organizations, all affirming our rights to safety, joy and self-expression.
