SHUT THE DOOR ON WAR!

October 6, 2012
CODEPINK Greater Dallas
Dallas, TX

In solidarity with groups around the country marking the 11th anniversary of the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan and with the CODEPINK-led delegation of U.S. activists in Pakistan to protest killer drones - and amidst war drums beating for further military intervention in the Middle East - CODEPINK Greater Dallas and allies held an anti-war/pro-civil-liberties march and rally on October 6, 2012 to say:

SHUT THE DOOR ON WAR! NO to U.S. aggression and occupation, drone attacks, sanctions, military intervention in Iran, Syria, Pakistan, Yemen or elsewhere, racism, Islamophobia, repression and attacks on civil liberties at home! Bring the troops home now! Foreclose on war, not people's homes! Money for life-affirming endeavors - not militarism!

As we gathered before the march, several bystanders from out of town saw us and decided to join the march.
Along the route, activists carried signs & banners saying, "WAR IS TERROR," "DON'T IRAQ IRAN," STOP KILLER DRONES," "WAR BATTERS WOMEN AND ABUSES CHILDREN," "WASTING AMERICA'S RESOURCES," "DRONES KILL," and chanted, SHUT, SHUT, SHUT THE DOOR! SHUT THE DOOR ON WAR," "HEY, HEY, HO, HO - KILLER DRONES HAVE GOT TO GO," "DROP SANCTIONS, NOT BOMBS," DRONES FLY, CHILDREN DIE," "AFGHANISTAN TO PALESTINE, OCCUPATION IS A CRIME" and more.

As we were chanting, "MONEY FOR JOBS, NOT FOR WAR," we came upon a grocery store with lots of people crossing the parking lot, so we changed to "MONEY FOR GROCERIES, NOT FOR WAR," and the people smiled & some chimed in with us. Further down the road, outside a hotel, we passed a wedding party posing for photos, so it became, "MONEY FOR WEDDINGS, NOT FOR WAR!" They smiled and waved. We passed several restaurants, and at one, what looked like a group of frat boys came outside to make a demonstrative scene of laughing at us and giving us "half a peace sign," while others, inside, smiled and flashed peace signs.

We arrived at our rally spot, directly across from the still-under-construction George W. Bush Library, and with that as a back-drop, we heard speakers from CODEPINK Greater Dallas, North Texas Veterans for Peace, Pax Christi Dallas, Occupy Dallas, and Iranians for Peace. About 50 people participated in the action.
