New York-- CODEPINK cofounder, Jodie Evans, placed Tony Blair under citizen's arrest today to demand accountability and justice for the lies Blair told the world about the war in Iraq during his time as Prime Minister of Britian. The arrest took place at NYC's 92Y where Tony Blair, interviewed by Katie Couric, spoke to a sold out crowd to discuss his new book. Blair's book tour events have been cancelled in the UK due to the threat of overwhelming protests.
"Tony Blair helped George W. Bush manufacture consent for the illegal war in Iraq. Tonight as I listened in the crowd he said he did not regret going to war in Iraq and Saddam had left the world no choice because he would not let weapon inspectors into the country. On top of lying there was no legal justification for the war, therefore it was an act of mass murder and Blair is a criminal who needs to be tried for his war crimes," said Jodie Evans, CODEPINK Cofounder, after her citizens arrest.
CODEPINK members have staged citizen arrests of other war criminals across the country, previous actions can be found here: http://www.codepinkalert.org/article.php?id=4941
CODEPINK, founded in 2002, is a women-initiated grassroots peace and social justice movement working to end the war in Iraq, stop new wars, and redirect our resources into health care, education and other life-affirming activities. We reject the Bush administration's fear-based politics that justify violence, and instead call for policies based on compassion, kindness and a commitment to international law. With an emphasis on joy and humor, CODEPINK women and men seek to activate, amplify and inspire a community of peacemakers through creative campaigns and a commitment to non-violence.
